About Kameliya

Who is Kameliya as a person?

There is a debate around therapists sharing their personal experience with clients and many of my colleagues work as blank screens for their clients aiming not to distract or influence the client in any way. That works well for some people.
I don’t work that way. I bring my authentic self and share parts of my experience with my clients when I feel it’s appropriate and beneficial without stealing the spotlight of course.
My life is proof that therapy works and can be transformative and I want everyone to know that there is hope. Getting out of a deep hole is possible and all the hard work it takes to do that is worth it.
As a child I was so shy, I’d sit in a corner, watching other kids play, and wonder what is wrong with me for not being able to join them.
As a teenager, I felt so ugly and awkward that I was sure no one could ever like or love me.
Entering adulthood, I saw myself as worthless, having zero confidence that I can hold a job, take care of myself and have a normal, let alone fulfilling, life.
Depression and anxiety were out of control.
And now, a decade later I am happily married. I have a wonderful daughter. And I am making it in my dream job. I get to enjoy little daily moments of joy and when faced with difficulties, which none of us are immune to, I know I am strong enough to get through them.
I am not perfect and my life isn’t either but I’ve come to accept that isn’t possible and can focus on what is in my control. I know who I am and what I want and enjoy the process of making it happen.

Who is Kameliya as a professional?

I care deeply about everyone I work with and what you are getting out of our time together. I always keep in mind your goals and wishes and work to help you get what You want in life, not what I or someone else believes you should. I don’t just want you to sit and talk for years on end without any results. Within a few months of starting I want you to be able to look back on how you felt in the beginning of your therapy and notice a positive change.
I do that by following your lead on what topics you want to discuss, how much you want to hear out of me and how much space you need to vent and process. But I also like to challenge your beliefs quite a bit. I listen intently for what in your past, in your beliefs and your automatic responses might be causing you trouble and aim to make it known to you so you have the power to change it and get out of the vicious cycles you find yourself repeating. I am quite good at zeroing in on hidden root causes and issues.
The most common feedback I get is that I have a really calming grounding presence allowing you to slow down, reduce your anxiety and look at your situation in a productive way. That combined with the various skills I have picked up from 10 years of continuous education in many different modalities and areas of psychotherapeutic work gives me the tools to help you understand yourself and others, process your feelings and emotions, find acceptance and peace of mind, and consciously choose what changes you want to make in your life.

What does Kameliya believe in?

  • Therapy is for everyone. We can all use a warm safe space, free from judgement and unsolicited advice, where we can truly be ourselves and be accepted unconditionally.
  • Change takes time. We have spent as many years as we are old practicing our current strategies and believes and making them automatic. We can’t flip them overnight.
  • It’s never too late or too early for therapy. There are effective ways to help children through struggles in their formative years to preserve their mental health and wellbeing. There are also benefits to having counselling in old age to process feelings, find acceptance and let go of hurtful thinking patterns
  • We are all doing the best we can. Even if others disagree. Even if that is just barely sitting up in bed when depression strikes.
  • Everyone is capable of changing, learning, growing, feeling happiness and joy. Sometimes we just need a bit of help getting there.
